Belize: Travel tips

Getting to Belize from Europe

Via Panama

Via Panama From Amsterdam, there are direct flights to Panama City, followed by a short connection to Belize City. It’s a smooth option if you prefer to avoid transiting through the United States.

Via Mexico

Another common route is flying into Cancún. From there, you can continue south by bus or private transfer to the Belize border, or take a ferry from Chetumal to the islands. There are also flight connections via Mexico City.

Via the United States

If you have an ESTA, you can connect through cities like Miami, Houston, or Atlanta, with regular onward flights to Belize City.

Connecting Guatemala and Belize

Combining these two countries is one of the most rewarding ways to experience the Maya world:

By land

From Flores or Tikal, it’s about a two-hour drive to the border at Melchor de Mencos/Benque Viejo. Once you cross into Belize, you’re already close to San Ignacio in the Cayo District. Private transfers can make the whole process straightforward.

By sea

If you’re coming from Guatemala’s Caribbean coast (Rio Dulce or Livingston), there’s also a boat connection to Punta Gorda in southern Belize. A less common but very memorable way to arrive.
