Destinations: exploring the many facets of "The Jewel"

Belizeans affectionately call their country “The Jewel.” It is easy to see why. From the sparkling turquoise of the reef to the deep emerald of the rainforest, every corner offers a different sparkle.

The coastal treasures: reef, islands and endless cayes

The Belize Barrier Reef is at the heart of it all. Along the coast, each destination offers unique vibes, and they all serve as gateways to a countless number of pristine cayes: tiny coral islands with white sands and clear turquoise water.

San Pedro (Ambergris Caye)

The liveliest island in Belize, ideal if you’re looking for great restaurants, comfortable beachfront stays, and easy access to top snorkeling spots like Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley, where you can swim alongside nurse sharks and stingrays.

Caye Caulker

Where the motto is literally “Go Slow.” This small, car-free island captures the true spirit of the Caribbean. It’s a place to walk barefoot, enjoy the breeze at “The Split,” and watch the world go by at a different pace.

Placencia

A narrow peninsula with some of the best beaches on the mainland. It still feels like a village, where you can walk the famous narrow sidewalk and take boat trips to remote, postcard-perfect spots like Silk Caye or Laughing Bird Caye.

Hopkins

Often called the friendliest village in Belize. It is the heart of the Garifuna culture. The experience here is all about connection: music, food, and a community that warmly shares its traditions.

The inland gems: jungle, caves and ancient history

San Ignacio

The center of the Cayo District, where the Macal and Mopan rivers meet. The town has a relaxed charm, especially on Saturdays when the local market fills with farmers and artisans. It’s also a great base for visiting nearby Maya sites like Xunantunich and Cahal Pech.

Caracol

Deep in the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, Caracol is the largest Maya site in Belize. It feels remote and uncrowded, and you can still climb Caana, the country’s tallest man-made structure, for wide views over the surrounding forest. The drive there is an adventure in itself, taking you through the pine forests with the chance to stop at places like Rio Frio Cave along the way.

Belmopan

Belize’s capital and a practical hub for exploring the country. Surrounded by nature and national parks, it offers easy access to caves, jungle trails, and both the western highlands and the coast.

Orange Walk

Known as “Sugar City,” this is where the boat journey to Lamanai begins. Traveling along the New River, you’re likely to spot wildlife like crocodiles, monkeys, and a variety of birds before even reaching the ruins.

Punta Gorda

In the far south, Punta Gorda feels quieter and less visited. It’s a place of cacao farms, Maya communities, and strong ties to the land. Ideal if you’re looking for a different, more local perspective.

Belize City

More than just a stopover, Belize City carries much of the country’s history. You’ll find places like the Museum of Belize, St. John’s Cathedral, and reminders of its colonial past, along with everyday city life that gives a more grounded sense of the country.
